A global revolution is taking place in the production and marketing of agricultural products.  In this New Agriculture, the focus is increasingly on gate-to-plate supply chain management.  This specialisation is aimed at those who see themselves as being a part of this New Agriculture and who want to learn how to play an effective role in the new agriproduct supply chains. 

The objectives of the course are to enable students to:

(a)  understand the principles and concepts of supply chains in agribusiness

(b)  develop a conceptual framework and practical skills for pursuing a career in supply chain management

(c)  develop knowledge and skills associated with identifying, analysing and solving problems associated with managing the logistics, quality assurance and food safety, legal and financial issues and risk.

(d)  understand the ways in which people within supply chains may structure alliances and develop strategies to achieve and maximise effective cooperation and outcomes for all concerned.

(e) understand the ethical dimensions of supply chain relationships.

(f) build a conceptual framework and skills in the formulation and implementation of supply chain strategy

Course structure

Students are required to complete four compulsory subjects.  The subjects are offered on a trimester basis according to the following schedule.

MGT555 Supply Chain Operations
AGB514 Supply Chain Relationships

MGT554 Supply Chain Development

The subjects will be taught by staff from the School of Agriculture in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, and from the Schools of Business, Financial Studies and Management in the Faculty of Commerce.

Subject Descriptions

AGB513  SUPPLY CHAIN PRINCIPLES  

An introduction to supply chain concepts and their application to business linkages in a supply chain system.  This subject would look at mega-trends in the agriproduct sector such as globalisation, WTO policies, food safety & health issues. Economic theory underlying relations along a supply chain especially transaction cost economics and risk analysis.  Description and analysis of different types of supply chains and how different supply chains have been formed.

MGT555  SUPPLY CHAIN OPERATIONS  

Suggested Prior Study: AGB513

This subject deals with the management of the physical, financial and legal aspects of supply chains.  Issues of particular importance include: managing logistics to minimise system-wide costs; managing quality assurance and food safety throughout the chain; managing legal and financial issues; and managing risk.

AGB515  SUPPLY CHAIN RELATIONSHIPS  

Suggested Prior Study: AGB513

This subject is concerned with the management of inter-personal relations in supply chains to reduce relationship risk.  It includes the broad areas of business alliances, ethics and the building of business networks.  It covers: relationship-building with potential partners; business ethics and the role of trust and transparency within an alliance; and communication with the customer.

MGT554  SUPPLY CHAIN DEVELOPMENT  

Suggested Prior Study: AGB513, MGT555, AGB515

This subject applies the principles of strategic marketing management to the problems of developing supply chains in domestic and international agribusiness markets. Builds the practical skills in supply chain development and integrates material covered in the other supply chain subjects.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent. Applicants with other academic and/or professional qualifications and/or work experience acceptable to the University will be considered. 

All distance education students are required to have access to a personal computer (IBM PC or compatible) and spreadsheet software .

* The four subjects may also be taken as a specialization in CSU’s MBA program. The fee per subject in 2001 is set at $950 for Australian residents,  the same as other MBA subjects.  The fee  may be claimed as a tax deduction (self-education expense) if it contributes to your current occupation and/or future promotional prospects. Check with your accountant.
