Insights and Trends.

·         Small farms dominate broad-acre and dairy sectors – approximately 65% producing 25% gross value of production.

·         Medium, large and very large farms comprise about 1/3 of farms in these sectors but generate 72% GVP.

·         In 1998-99 off farm income accounted for an average of ½ total household income in the broad-acre sector.

·         In 2000-01 approximately 6.5% of broad-acre farms increased the amount of land they operated.

·         In 2000-01 about 1.5 million Ha were added to existing cropping and mixed cropping / livestock enterprises.

·         Since 1977-78 farms disposing of land have achieved a superior rate of return that farms buying land on one occasion – 1982-83.

·         Excluding capital appreciation, in 2000-01 farms that reduced their holding size achieved a rate of return of 1.3%, compared to 3.4% for expanding enterprises and 1.7% for farms that remained static.

·         Medium, large and very large farms generate 76% of farm cash income and carry 70% of farm debt.

·         Smaller farms generate 20% of farm case income and carry 30% of farm debt – thus experiencing a comparatively higher debt to earnings ratio.
